We thank Dawn and Paul very much for their interest and support!! My thanks also to Bunty, Penny, John LeG and Anthony for their help with this visit.
We were delighted to welcome Dawn Wolrich from ACoRP and Professor Paul Salveson to Glossop Station today! It has been some time since their last visit and it was good to update them with recent projects. There was a particular focus on Art Projects. At Glossop Clare and Sonja explained how Glossop Arts Project worked and showed the current display. They also highlighted ART IN THE WINDOW, prior to its launch on 1st of August. Moving on to Dinting Dawn and Paul were welcomed by Pam from
Project Earth who showed them the ceramic murals along with Helen and Anthony two of the murals' creators - in brilliant sunshine!! Paul commented that it was nice to see Dinting looking more welcoming and he and Dawn were able to meet Janet in the Booking Office who does much to help our community work at Dinting. Back on the train to Glossop Dawn and Paul were then able to see the progress of the Embankment Garden. The Poetry Platform's current display was ably explained by Penny Greenwood - Penny was once dubbed Glossop's Poet Laureate by Paul!! The new Awards' poster was admired and Paul commented that MD Alex's photo made him look as if he had a halo!! On for a welcome break and lunch in TWIG cafe where co owner Mike cheerfully greeted everyone. As Dawn and Paul had last seen these premises as the old booking office they were truly impressed at its transformation! Mike is hoping to extend afternoon opening hours in the near future and we will of course publicise this. Then a quick look at the redesigned Howard Street Garden, the new railings, renovated windows and the recently arrived, but not yet on display, tourist information board. This was followed by a nice wander around Glossop highlighting shops, Norfolk Square Gardens - looking really attractive and colourful - and the Market. And still the sun shone!!We thank Dawn and Paul very much for their interest and support!! My thanks also to Bunty, Penny, John LeG and Anthony for their help with this visit. From the 1st to 31st August over 50 independent retailers in Glossop will be featuring local artists' work in their shop windows. Glossop is home to some very talented artists and there is a trail linking where pictures can be seen hence ART IN THE WINDOW!There is a very attractive trail leaflet with a map which an be picked up at the station, town hall or any of the shops featuring the pictures. We too are taking part with Glossop Arts Project pictures on display in Glossop Station Art Gallery in the Waiting Room. Come and enjoy a wander around Glossop this summer, seek out the pictures, have a coffee.....More information on Twitter @art in the window, Facebook art in the Window - Glossop and Hadfield and on their website at www.glossopdaletrust.org.uk/art-in-the-window
Following the recent 150 celebrations Marple station now sports a series of large posters featuring covers from Agatha Christie novels with Miss Marple as the famous lady detective. They are well worth a visit! There is also a large commemorative 150 montage created with a local primary school and two blue plaques - one commemorating the 150th anniversary and the other the visit by Matthew Pritchard Agatha Christies' grandson.
On Friday 24th July BBC North West Tonight presenter Yunus Mulla and film crew visited Dinting station as part of a feature about the Children from Chernobyl project visiting Glossop. This Glossop based charity helps children and their families stay in Glossop to give them a break from the still radio active environment in which they live at home. That morning Yunus had interviewed one family at home in Glossop. The children and families were then filmed leaving Dinting station for a trip by train to Manchester where Yunus met up with again at the Walker Art Gallery. The feature was shown that evening. Yunus thanked Janet at Dinting Booking Office and FOGS for assistance with logistics on the day.
