These pictures by Glossop Artist James Chadderton now form the display inside the waiting room. They are more controversial in content than Tracy's work but we hope the prints get passengers talking!! And remind local artists/photographers of FOGS' willingness for this space to be used by them. We ask them to get in touch via the website if they would like to get their work on display. We thank Stephen Flanagan from the Framery on High Street East, Glossop for printing the canvases and his support - prints can be obtained from Stephen. Also thanks as always to Simon Denvers for putting up the canvases and for managing the Station Gallery and maintaining ongoing links with local artists. Matthew Cox will be having his own display featuring Glossop station in the past on the wall between the waiting rooms. This will be changed regularly. Matthew is also working on a Storyboard project on behalf of Northern for selected stations on the Glossop Line - more details soon! The Sky is the Limit!! Well not quite!! Story Rail and Network Rail have now installed the new glazing for the Canopy skylights and for those inside the main concourse. The effect is simply stunning!! Stark grey metal surrounds complement clear glazing creating the most light the Canopy has ever had - everybody is looking up!! FOGs thanks Chris fom Story dnd Karen from Network Rail for their pesverance with this part of the refurbishment project and their ongiong patient negotitions with the Conservation Officer at High Peak Borough Council. The results are worth it!! Do go and have a look!! The train now arriving at Platform One!! As of last weeek the new PA system for Glossop Station has been installed!! We have waited patiently for 2 years for this! The system is excellent and it now means that out of course running, cancellations etc can be broadcast. It is not the intention to announce every train! Dave and Graham have made several useful announcements including polite warnings for passengers infringing station rules! We thank the High Peak and Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership for funding the equipment. Jean Wharmby hopes to view it soon and we will issue an invite to Mike Rose to do the same. CONDOLENCES Friends of Glossop Station would like to offer their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Kenneth Stott who died outside the station last Saturday evening. New photos of the changing station Thanks to the efforts of John Kimpton and Simon Denvers there are now lots of images on this site - see photo section - showing all the refurbishments taking place at Glossop Station as at the end of February. The Canopy has now been completely repainted in tradtional colours of cream. red and green. It has never looked so good! The railings on the platform side have also been finished and they look splendid! Our thanks to Tighes - the Painters working with Story Rail. They have had to contend with some extremely difficult winter weather in the completion of these tasks. Karen, from Network Rail, advises that further work on the Canopy and the platform will commence at the beginning of March and is scheduled for completion at the end of the month. The Hanging Baskets and tubs, currently in store will then be returned to their original positions. The much awaited tannoy is partly installed and should be operational shortly. Bunty and Neil visited Country Baskets in Wakefield recently and new flower material was purchased for the Spring replenishment of the indoor containers. Recent milder weather has brought out daffodils for the first time ever on the Embankment -following its summer makeover!! - and in the new Winter Hanging Baskets at the entrance to the station. Spring is on its way!! News from Wemyss Bay Our lovely twin station Wemyss Bay, the terminal station on the line from Glasgow is also having some work carried out during the winter months. The Friends there are overseeing repairs to their bookshop and gallery before it reopens later this month. Fortunately the severe gales experienced in this part of Scotland on the 3rd of January did not damage the fabric of the station which has signifcant areas of glass canopies, nor did it affect the newly established polytunnel in the horticultural section. Nancy (Chair) and her husband recently had a meal with Paul Salveson a good friend to FOGS. Paul and Hester won a prize voucher in our Christmas Raffle for Mettricks' Butchers which they are looking forward to redeeming! Nancy and Neil are also exploring the possiblity of exchanging local Art work between the two Station galleries. Wemyss and work carried out by the Friends in conjunction with the Railway Heritage Trust is deservedly commended in the current Winter issue of ACoRP's Train Times magazine. The Glossop Station Song!! This was the song sung by Ms. Wall and her reception Class from the Duke of Norfolk Primary School on their recent visit to Glossop Station. We thank Ms. Wall for letting us have the words! Down at Glossop Station Early in the morning See all the engines All in a row See the engine driver Pull a little lever Oo oo oo And off we go Graham, at the Booking Office, has now been given a copy By Keith and he is under strict instuctions to learn the words for future visits! Paint does not always dry!! The painters at Glossop Station showed considerable skill as they battled to paint the Canopy and railings in temperatures often only just above freezing in the first two weeks of February. So far they have managed to complete the undercoating and glossing of the Canopy. The metal supports remain in undercoat as do the railings on the Co-op side. The entrance doors were taken away for staining and they have returnred looking resplendent with new golden door handles! With temperatures dropping well below freezing towards the end of last week the painters have understandably admitted a temporary defeat and we look forward to their return when the weather is kinder! |
